As part of the Dept. for Education's sustainability leadership and climate action plans initiative, we have a sustainability lead and a sustainability governor in school. We have worked with members of Let's Go Zero and National Education Nature Park to help us to become more sustainable as a school. We have worked with these two partners to help to devise a Climate Action Plan. This Action Plan is based on four areas of sustainability:
Decarbonisation (reducing the amount of carbon dioxide we produce each year): Currently, our school's total carbon footprint is estimated to be 355.35 tonnes CO2 equivalent each year. This is the same as each pupil flying from London to Paris 13 times every year!
Biodiversity (the different plants and animals supported on the school site): We have been mapping the different habitats on the school site and looking how we can increase the different species found at school. This is a great opportunity to examine and learn about different plants and animals on the school site.
Curriculum and Green Careers (how we add sustainability to our school curriculum and how we prepare children for environmentally-friendly careers in the future): As part of our commitment to the whole child, we want to give our children the opportunity to follow many of their interests and curiosities.
Adaptability and Climate Resilience (how we adapt the building and how we use the building to meet the challenges of a changing climate): this could include adding more areas of shade in the playground or how we manage times of heavier rainfall.
We will be discussing some of these themes at an age-appropriate level with the children (e.g. how we can have a wider range of flowers on site, why it is important not to waste water or energy).
